Six Million Steps are a London-based collective of DJs, record collectors, and enthusiasts of soulful black music. We specialise in presenting radio shows, producing mixes, and occasionally hosting club-style events.
We first started working together properly at the end of 2002, so I guess that qualifies us for an official 21st anniversary celebration of some sort sometime, provided it’s not too far from Bexleyheath.
Our initial ‘business plan’ was to provide consultancy to record companies in order for them to release compilation albums and CDs. Most of them didn’t (and still don’t) have a clue regarding the wealth of vintage releases and recordings which they have ownership of, and we even managed to get one of our projects released by a major label on CD and vinyl.
Opportunities for such rich pickings were a bit thin on the ground, so we diversified, embracing the heady world of internet radio, as well as developing our online presence with a web site offering downloadable mixes.
In case you were wondering, our name is borrowed from a 1978 jazz funk record by Rahni Harris – ‘Six Million Steps (West Runs South)’ which commemorated a 2,500 mile charity run along the length of the US east coast by athlete Andy West in aid of Muscular Dystrophy.
